What is motor neurone disease?
MND is a rare disease that affects around 5,000 people in the UK. In most cases, the disease occurs between the ages of 60 and 70, but it can also occur in younger or older people. Motor neurons are nerve cells that transmit information from the brain or spinal cord to the muscles. Damage to these cells prevents the transmission of information, leading to a progressive loss of motor skills, weakness and muscle atrophy.
Common signs of MND

- Speaking may become slurred
- Counselling for loss, grief and bereavement care.
- Swallowing to the point that tube feeding is required
- Breathing
10-15% of cases of ALS are accompanied by frontotemporal dementia.
