Staying Safe At Home

As we age, our mobility, motor skills and balance can decrease, which can affect our gait. Our normal hearing, sight, smell and touch may deteriorate. These changes can affect our reactions and interactions with the environment.

Here are some ways to make your home safe.

Throughout the kitchen

Accidents often happen in the kitchen. Taking precautions such as properly storing knives and other sharp objects, using the back burners on the cooker, and tying up loose clothing while cooking can help keep you safe at home. Tying up loose rugs can also prevent falls.

Cooking should never be left unattended and hot liquids should never be carried for longer than necessary.

Excellent suggestion The door of the fridge is an ideal place to put emergency contact details. Add the mobile, work and landline numbers of your next of kin, your doctor and an up-to-date medication list.

In the toilet

The likelihood of slipping and falling is greater in the bathroom than in other rooms. Slippery surfaces, uneven toilet seats and manoeuvring in and out of the bath can be a hazard, especially as you become less mobile or weaker. In addition to installing grab bars around the shower and toilet, laying out a non-slip bath mat can help prevent falls.

In the bedroom

The bedroom is also a typical place for falls, especially during bedtime. Check the height of your bed and consider fitting a bed rail or bed height adjuster to make it easier to get in and out of bed. It is also important to keep the bedroom free of clutter and well lit.

In the living area

Falls are often caused by slipping or tripping on the same level, for example on a carpet or mat. Take the time to make sure your furniture is stable and comfortable and that you can get in and out easily. Fit door handles to interior doors as they are easier to grip and use.

In the stairwell

The stairs are one of the biggest hazards for falls. Therefore, there are steps you can take to increase safety in this area of your home. Make sure there are sturdy handrails for balancing. Make sure the carpet or runner is secure and remove any rugs. Again, make sure the room is well lit at night and during the day.

Maintaining safety outdoors

When it comes to your home’s security, do not overlook the outdoors. Consider installing a sturdy railing and outdoor lighting at each entrance to your property to maximise your visibility. Keep walkways free of algae and debris such as slippery leaves, loose stones and flagstones.
